ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

NANU Studio is a small business owned by a woman of color who believes in creating good products while doing good for the planet. Owner-Illustrator Krishna grew up in Tanzania while wildlife, nature, and safaris played a big part in her upbringing. In effort to give back to the natural world that enriched her childhood, 100% of net proceeds of the Prime Mates cards and prints benefit the Jane Goodall Institute.

We are always looking for ways to make our business practices more sustainable and thus reserve the right to change product materials and packaging to uphold this commitment without notice. Read further to see how our products are eco-friendly.

NANU Studio products are designed and illustrated in our wind-powered studio in Hoboken, New Jersey. In general, our products and packaging components are  made in the USA, with the exception of enamel pins, which are made in China. Merchandise is minimally packed and uses recycled material wherever possible. 

Our most eco-friendly products are our cards. They are printed locally in Mahwah, New Jersey, which is about 50 minutes north of Hoboken. The printing facility is solar-powered and uses water-based inks on 100% post-consumer waste (PCW) recycled paper to print our cards. 

We phased out the use of clear protective sleeves for our retail customers, because, while these sleeves are made from compostable material, they only properly degrade in industrial composts where the internal heat reaches much higher temperatures than in residential compost bins. However, we do offer the sleeves as part of packaging for our wholesale customers. If you're a wholesale buyer and would like to skip the sleeves, let us know when you place your order.

 

SUSTAINABILITY DETAILS

CARDS: printed at a solar-powered facility with water-based inks on 100% PCW paper. 

FINE ART PRINTS: Fine art prints are archival quality and printed on 100% cotton rag paper. Prints are packed with 100% recycled material backing boards and placed in protective sleeves. All prints are signed in pencil.

ENVELOPES: All cards are paired with brown Kraft envelopes made from 100% post-consumer waste content. 

STICKERS: Our matte finish vinyl stickers are produced in Dana Point, California by Vinyl Disorder.

ENAMEL PINS: To make our enamel pins, we partnered with Night Owls Print Shop in Houston, Texas, who in turn are partnered with a factory in China that maintains good working standards.
